Rough and shaky on acceleration then smooth?

Postby puppypilgrim » 26 Oct 2011, 21:48

My 2005 Derbi Atlantis accelerates well and fast. However, I am wondering it all is well. It has 7200 km. Here is the sequence:

- From a standstill, twist throttle. Engine sounds louder for the first inch of throttle travel, wait briefly -- then scooter moves with forward motion rapidly.

- While accelerating, there is a shaking and vibration, then once past an indicated 30 km/h or so, it goes completely as smooth as one would expect a 2-stroke engine to be. In the morning commuter traffic, I have no problem keeping up with cars on the Arthur Laing and so forth. I also ride up Patterson (which becomes Willingdon) from Marine.

- When lifting off throttle, it goes through that same patch of rough\shakiness before settling smooth again.

I emphasize that the bike is making good power and has what I believe to be decent power and pulls better than the average 50cc bike. It has no issues climbing bridges, hills. Its just the rough patch during acceleration I worry about.

Should I be concerned about pulleys and belts?

Check the roller weights and belt to make sure they are in good shape.

The bike was serviced by Luis and Will at Urban Wasp today. Its been given a clean bill of health and considered a strong 50cc motor.
No belt was needed.

Body panel vibration apparently. Luis tells me that is a characteristic of Derbi scooters. The material is flimsy and the body panel fasteners tabs fragile. Since the previous owner(s) of my scoot have dropped the bike a few times, there are scratches and broken panel tabs.

The vibration is not with the engine and only occurs at a specific lower-rpm range.

I've discovered the source of the vibration. Its coming from the cracked handlebar cover. The bike had been dropped by the previous owner(s) and resulted in a crack in the handlebar cover.
